President Donald Trump made not one but two unexpected layovers at the airport in Allentown over the weekend, surprising area residents and prompting queries about why.
Trump made his first stop Friday evening at Lehigh Valley International Airport en route to his resort in Bedminister, New Jersey and appeared again on Sunday evening, heading back to Washington D.C.
The Friday landing marked the first time Trump had stopped at the airport on his way to his New Jersey golf course, according to The Morning Call of Allentown.
On his return trip, Trump held an impromptu press conference fielding questions on firing of the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on the repositioning of U.S. nuclear submarines, drug prices and starvation in Gaza.
Trump used the larger airport to shift from Air Force One to the Marine One helicopter that could land at his resort and from helicopter to the 747 on the way back.
The Call reports that the reason for the Lehigh Valley layovers may well be construction at Trump’s usual transfer stop — the Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey.
The runway repair at Morristown is supposed to be finished Aug. 30, the Call wrote.
All the airborne activity got social media going over the weekend in the area, with plane and helicopter and even fighter jet sightings, the Call said.
