SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Music lovers filled St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Scranton for “An Afternoon of Music and Song,” a benefit concert hosted by the Anthracite Opera Company.

The event featured performers across multiple genres and styles, with vocalists and musicians presenting everything from classical Italian opera and showtunes to Spanish guitar and more.

Anthracite Opera Company director Gary Richards said the organization’s mission is rooted in supporting children and honoring the arts.

“It was called the Anthracite Opera Company because it really stands for Always Our Children,” said Richards. “That’s why I started the company. I saw a little five-year-old boy embarrassed because he’s wearing his sister’s hand me down. And as adults, we have to take care of the children.”

Proceeds from the show will be used to buy winter coats for less fortunate children, with the goal of ensuring no child has to feel the way Richards described.
