Happy Birthday Scranton!

“She doesn’t look a day over 140,” joked DJ Dylan of Cowgirl Pills, the duo that performed at the event.

A crowd gathered outside the Everhart Museum in Nay Aug Park to celebrate Scranton’s 160th anniversary of its incorporation.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti says it was a date she’s been eying for a while.

“We’ve been looking at the calendar for quite some time, and in my office I have the flag that says incorporation date, April 23rd, 1866,” said Mayor Cognetti. “So, for the whole time of my mayorship, I’ve been thinking about this.”

A DJ laid down some tunes as parkgoers were able to enjoy some cupcakes, pizza, small Scranton themed activities, and free admission to the Everhart Museum – as well as enjoying the beautiful weather; a needed refrain from Saturday’s storms that caused the party to be rescheduled to Sunday.

Everyone, including the DJs, seemed to be having a good time.

“it’s such an honor to just like be a part of the tapestry of this city and it’s such an exciting time to be in the arts and to be in Scranton as a whole,” said Dylan.

Mayor Cognetti and city officials were pleased with the block party, and it’s just the kickoff to the many events the city will host throughout the rest of the year for America 250 and the World Cup.

“We wanted to do something special this year, this is the beginning of that,” continued Mayor Cognetti. “Doing a party for the community here at the Everhart seems like a great way to kick off the Spring and the Summer and celebrate our city and bring folks together, and then we’ll continue to have, you know, America 250 events throughout the entire rest of the year.”

It was a day to celebrate the electric city so many people call home, so happy birthday Scranton, here’s to another 160 years.
