Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia will bring together education advocates, supporters, alumni, and civic leaders this Thursday, April 30, for its Spring Soirée.
Held at the Ballroom at the Ben in Center City and emceed by FOX29’s Shaynah Ferreira, the evening will celebrate leadership, educational opportunity, and “the sustained investment needed to strengthen Philadelphia’s teacher and student pipeline.”
State Sen. Vincent Hughes will be recognized for his long-standing advocacy for education and efforts to create broader opportunities for young people across Philadelphia. The Twin Sister Docs will also be honored for using their platform at the intersection of medicine, public service and storytelling — work that has resonated both locally and beyond. Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson is expected to deliver remarks acknowledging their contributions to health advocacy, representation and community leadership.
“Senator Hughes has been a powerful champion for educational opportunity, and we are proud to recognize his leadership and deep commitment to young people in Philadelphia,” says Michelle Palmer, executive director of Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia. “It is also a joy to honor The Twin Sister Docs, whose work reflects the kind of service, excellence, and community impact that this evening was all about.”
While the soirée serves as a key fundraiser, it also spotlights the organization’s year-round programming — particularly its long-running summer teacher training initiative in Germantown, which prepares college students to lead classrooms while gaining hands-on experience.
Since its founding in 1995, Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia has served more than 1,600 students and trained over 500 college teaching fellows. The program offers eight years of free academic enrichment for students in grades 5 through 12, helping them stay on track for admission to competitive high schools, college, and future careers. And its results are notable — among surveyed 8th graders in the summer 2025 class, 100% planned to attend selective high schools.
Bringing together supporters, educators, alumni, and community leaders, the Spring Soirée will be both a celebration and a reminder of the long-term investment required to shape Philadelphia’s future through its young people. Tickets (starting at $125) are currently on sale for the affair, which will feature an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, a seated dinner, and an auction.
