CUMRU TOWNSHIP, Pa. – It’s another doggie story — have I got your attention?
“We have a group called Dogs Playing For Life here,” said Alyssa Budock with the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL.) “They are a national non-profit organization that teaches training sessions for dog play groups at shelters.”
Speaking of attention, it’s the attention of these pups, staff, and potential adoptive pet parents that those behind Dogs Playing for Life want.
“We want to be able to be trained on dog play groups. Being able to facilitate, learn different training resources. All that from Dogs Playing for Life,” Budock said.
Isolation is a big issue for shelter pets and with this training, the ARL is hoping to help these dogs transition from the shelter into a new home.
“This is a great way for dogs to interact with other dogs. Not be stuck in a kennel by themselves all day. Really get some energy out, get that socialization that they need. It really gives us more information about the dogs, too, that we can better educate their adopters on how they’ll do with other dogs in the future,” Budock said.
Think of it as a baseline assessment — for your potential new best friend.
“This is a great way for us to get true, real information about how a dog is going to react to other dogs and even set them up for training, set them up for better interactions with other dogs,” she added. “We had a lot of dogs already that came in not doing well with the other dogs but are slowly transitioning and walk around in the play yard with the other dogs no problem.”
