WEST READING, Pa. – A volunteer at Reading hospital is celebrating a milestone.
Mary Ellen Batman is marking 10,000 volunteer service hours.
She started volunteering in the 1990s during her summers off while working as a teacher.
Since then, she’s served the hospital in a number of ways, including as the former president of the Friends of Reading Hospital.
Now, she serves as a wayfinder, escorting patients to their appointments and helping them navigate the hospital campus.
She encourages everyone to volunteer.
“I have found that when you volunteer, there’s no pressure. You’re gonna get out of it what you put into it. And it’s fun. And I’m glad that I can help people,” Mary Ellen said.
Reading Hospital team members surprised Mary Ellen with flowers and Tower Health swag. She’ll also get a commemorative pin to mark the occasion.
