University to hold ‘Celebrate Marywood’ fundraising event

Marywood University’s annual signature fundraising event, Celebrate Marywood, will be held May 7 outdoors at the Motherhouse and Seminary Morgan Memorial Garden on the university’s campus.

Virginia Doherty McGregor, Scranton, and the Rev. Thomas M. Muldowney, Moscow, will be honored during the celebration, a garden party-style event that features dueling pianos and fireworks.

The event was created to showcase the campus and programs, as well as strengthen the university’s connections in the community. It also honors distinguished individuals each year whose service, leadership and contributions reflect Marywood’s mission and positively impact the region.

Proceeds from this year’s event will fund the renovation and transformation of the Center for Natural & Health Sciences into a state-of-the-art facility supporting nursing, physician assistant, pre-med and science programs, including upgraded laboratory spaces, enhanced classrooms and advanced simulation environments. Marywood’s natural and health sciences students consistently attain licensure pass rates ranging from 98% to 100%, according to the university.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221 nominates officers

The 2026-2027 nomination of officers for the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221, Carbondale, was held at the American Legion Training Center, 13 Hospital St., Carbondale, during the April 16  Auxiliary meeting.

Nominated are: President, Gina Iacovazzi; first vice president, Barbara Galavitz; second vice president, Karen Blake; secretary, Michelle Poyer; sergeant-at-arms, Melissa Slick-Dick; treasurer, Beth Barnes; historian, Michelle Poyer; chaplain, Julia Doyle, and membership, Kathy Surace.

Dollar General opens in Carbondale

The Dollar General store at 54 N. Main St. in Carbondale is now open, the company announced. The store was set to hold its grand opening April 25.

“At Dollar General, we believe the addition of our new Carbondale store provides positive economic growth for the community through the creation of new jobs and career growth opportunities; increased accessibility to affordable products; the generation of tax revenue and access to Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of business intelligence and development, in a company news release. “As part of our mission of serving others, we look forward to being a strong business partner and good neighbor, as well as welcoming customers to our new store.”

The Carbondale store is expected to employ about six to 10 people, depending on the individual needs of the store, company officials said.

The addition of the Carbondale location opens the opportunity for schools, nonprofit organizations and libraries within a 15-mile radius of the store to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants, according to the release. The foundation supports literacy and education initiatives.
