RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) –The Rapid City Public Library is celebrating America’s 250th birthday this year with an open reading challenge to the community.
The Rapid City Public Library is challenging the community to read and register 250,000 books this year to celebrate 250 years of America.
“A lot of new years resolutions are about bettering yourself and so I think this is just a great opportunity to stick to that and find a book that you really enjoy and just keep with it and do it all year long.” Public Relations Coordinator Laurinda Tapper said.
The Public Library has a wide-variety of genres and the staff can help you find the right reading fit.

“I like fantasy and also horror books. I think especially with the murder mystery books that I like is just seeing how and seeing what people can think of with these stories.” Douglas Sophomore Lily Roberts said.
There are three categories: kids 12 and under, teens, and adults 18 and up.
“So in the kids category an adult can read to their children and then it counts. So this is a great way to encourage early literacy and to really motivate people to get out there and read to their kids. Because that is so important in pre-school.” Tapper said.
“It’s entertaining, honestly. I just like seeing what other people like to write about and just explore the world of other people’s imagination. I would say, always keep reading, it’s so much fun to explore that world.” Roberts said.
In addition to the Public Library, the Book Mobile is also out and about throughout each month, bringing books to your neighborhoods to help assist in the challenge.
