For the 10th straight season, the University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team advanced to the Landmark Conference title game with a 13-4 semifinal win over Susquehanna University on Wednesday night at Weiss Field.

Jillian Lopez led the Royals (14-4) with five goals, four draw controls and added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Eileen Hewitt added two goals and three assists along with six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Leah Smith and Mia Dinnicenzio paced the defense, each with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalie Eva Guerino made three saves.

Scranton, the No. 1 seed, hosts No. 2 Catholic University in the Landmark championship game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Catholic advanced with a 13-9 semifinal win over Moravian University. The Royals are seeking their fourth straight title, having defeated the Cardinals in the final each of the past three seasons. Catholic is looking for its 14th title after winning from 2008-12, 2014-19 and 2021-22.

Men’s lacrosse

At Weiss Field, Kyle Holmes scored six goals, including the 200th of his career, to lead the University of Scranton past Susquehanna University, 18-8, in the Landmark Conference semifinals Wednesday.

Holmes reached the milestone on his fifth of the six goals. He is the third player in program history to hit the mark.

Chase Ritchy added a career-high five goals and two assists for the Royals (12-6), who have won 11 straight. Quinn Carson, Jason Kozak and Patrick D’Amaro each had two goals. Carson added two assists and Kozak one. Goalie Carsen Kirchner made 10 saves and Shawn Martin was 14 for 23 on faceoffs and had a game-high eight ground balls.

On Saturday at noon, top-seeded Scranton hosts No. 2 Catholic University in the Landmark final. Catholic beat Elizabethtown College in its semifinal, 19-11. The Royals are looking to capture their fourth consecutive title and fifth overall.

Men’s tennis

At Madison, New Jersey, the University of Scranton lost to Drew University, 4-0, in the first round of the Landmark Conference playoffs.

After sweeping the doubles to earn one point, the Rangers won at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles to secure the match.

The Royals conclude their season with an 8-11 record.

Baseball

At Bethlehem, the University of Scranton closed out its regular season with a 17-0 victory over Moravian University in a Landmark Conference game.

Leading, 3-0, the Royals (25-15 overall, 14-10 league) erupted for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to win at least 25 games for the fourth time in five seasons.

Conor Campbell had three hits and four RBIs, while John Heitzman added three hits and three RBIs. Matthew Gannon chipped in two hits, while Jimmy Lundari contributed two RBIs.

Scranton next plays in the Landmark Conference playoffs, which begin May 6 at a site and opponent to be determined. The double-elimination tournament then shifts to Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster.

Softball

At Scranton, the University of Scranton finished its regular season with a 10-5 win over crosstown rival Marywood University in the first game of a doubleheader. The second game was cancelled due to rain.

Trailing, 5-4, after five innings, the Royals (19-19) rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth. Meghan McDonnell homered leading off the inning to tie the game. Two walks and a single loaded the bases. Gabriella Gorzkowski walked to force home a run. A double play and wild pitch enabled two runs to score. Julia Vesey capped the uprising with a RBI double.

Mollie Ferreira was 4 for 4 for Scranton with one RBI. Celia Totaro added three hits and scored three runs. McDonnell finished with two hits, which Gorzkowski knocked in four runs.

Renee McDonald led Marywood (19-14) with three hits and two RBIs. Kat Davis chipped in two hits.

While Scranton did not qualify for the Landmark Conference playoffs, the Pacers are the No. 3 seed for the Atlantic East Conference tournament and open against No. 2 Neumann University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Arlington, Virginia.

Region 19 Division II playoffs: At West Windsor Twp., New Jersey, Lackawanna College is the No. 3 seed for the NJCAA Region 19 Division II tournament to be held Friday and Saturday at Mercer County Community College.

Lackawanna (40-13) faces No. 2 Delaware Tech CC (26-12) in its opener Friday at noon. The other matchup pits No. 1 Mercer (39-5) against No. 4 Salem Community College (28-18) at 10 a.m. The two losing teams then meet at 2 p.m. and the winners play at 4 p.m. The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday with games at 10 a.m., noon and, if necessary, 2 p.m.

The Region 19 champion and runnerup advance to the Atlantic A and B District playoffs next weekend hosted by Region 10.
