The New York Yankees are evaluating the promotion of top prospect Spencer Jones following a series of injuries to the team’s outfield rotation. Jasson Dominguez suffered an elbow contusion after being hit by a pitch during a game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Dominguez’s injury occurred just two games after he was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Giancarlo Stanton, who is currently on the injured list with a right-calf strain. The Yankees now face a depth shortage after designating Randal Grichuk for assignment earlier this week.
Jones has produced significant offensive numbers in Triple-A, slashing .242/.364/.538 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs through 26 games this season. While the 24-year-old maintains a 33.6% strikeout rate, his 13.6% walk rate and 134 wRC+ have kept him productive according to Empire Sports Media.
Journalist Chris Kirschner highlighted the contact issues facing the young outfielder despite his impressive physical tools. Heavy.com reported that Jones recently recorded 37 strikeouts in 91 at-bats for the RailRiders.
“Jones’ issues remain the same. The power is otherworldly, but he’s still not making enough contact,” Kirschner wrote Thursday.
According to FanGraphs data cited in the report, Jones possesses a 67.1% zone contact rate, which represents a challenging metric for a Triple-A player. However, his performance in major-league spring training included six home runs in just 28 at-bats, demonstrating his elite raw power.
The Yankees currently rely on Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham in the outfield. If Dominguez requires a stint on the injured list, the team may look to Jones or super-utility players like Max Schuemann and Jose Caballero to fill the void.
Yahoo Sports noted that Jones’ defensive versatility allows him to play all three outfield positions, potentially offering rest for Aaron Judge. The Yankees are also expecting the return of shortstop Anthony Volpe, who may be activated from a shoulder injury as early as Friday for the series against the Baltimore Orioles.
