Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., will mark the 200th anniversary of its consecration next Saturday from 2-5 p.m. The celebration includes the live exhumation of a time capsule sealed inside the church’s brownstone cornerstone in 1863.

The event will also mark the public unveiling of the church’s newly restored nave and sanctuary following a major plaster renovation.

Dignitaries attending include Reading Mayor Eddie Moran and the Rt. Rev. Daniel G.P. Gutierrez, Bishop of Pennsylvania.

The Berks Youth Chorus will perform, followed by a catered public reception with music by Dave Cullen and desserts donated by Sweet Street. Historical information and building tours will be available during this time.

According to the church’s website, Christ Church was the first English-speaking church in Reading. One of its founding members was a delegate at the Continental Congress. The building was once a cathedral. To learn more about the history of Christ Church, visit https://rdgchristchurch.org/live/our-history.
