PHILADELPHIA — The Pittsburgh Penguins (7-2-1) completed their first 10-game segment of the season and passed with flying colors and more October wins than they’ve had since 2016-17. The Penguins have points in six straight games, including five wins, as they face the hated Philadelphia Flyers (4-3-1) Tuesday at the Comcast XFinity Center.

Fans may note the early start time. The puck drops just after 6 p.m.

Not 7, but 6 p.m.

The Flyers are heavy favorites on the FanDuel Sportsbook (-172), and the sportsbook has a few more prop bets.

The Penguins threatened to boat race the St. Louis Blues on Monday by scoring on their first two shots in the first minute of the game, but they rested on their laurels and St. Louis tied the game before the Penguins pulled away for a 6-3 win at PPG Paints Arena.

Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, and Erik Karlsson had three points each, but all in different ways. Karlsson had three assists. Rust had two goals. Crosby had one goal and two assists.

Evgeni Malkin had two points, including a goal. Parker Wotherspoon and Anthony Mantha were the other goal scorers.

Crosby’s three points gave him 1701 career points. He is the ninth player all-time to reach the mark, and the fourth fastest behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Marcel Dionne.

The Penguins’ 16 points are the second most in the Eastern Conference, and they are tied for the third-best winning percentage in the NHL.

The Flyers are another rebuilding team with bigger aspirations than their paper roster might inspire. Early in the offseason, the team hired Rick Tocchet as their new coach, and they have now won three of their last four games.

Make sure to follow our Philly colleague and proud Penn Stater, Will James.

Per Rick Tocchet:

Sam Ersson stays in goal tonight against Pittsburgh.

Zamula in for Ginning, Deslauriers in for Grebenkin.

The Flyers have breathed new life into underachieving youngster Trevor Zegras, who is tied for the team lead in both assists (6) and points (8) with Sean Couturier.

Since Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry played Monday, it is almost a certainty that Arturs Silovs will go for the team on Tuesday. Philadelphia has given Dan Vladar a slight majority of the starts (5), compared to Samuel Ersson (3), but Ersson backstopped the Flyers’ 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders.

Also, Penguins fans may note that Tocchet is inserting Nic Deslauriers into the lineup. Deslauriers is a heavyweight fighter who has taken liberties against the Penguins in the past.

Penguins Game Notes

The Penguins have points in nine of their last 11 games against Philadelphia (7-2-2) and are 13-5-3 in their last 21 games played against the Flyers.

Since entering the league in 2006-07, no defenseman has more points against the Flyers than Kris Letang (54). He has points in 14 of his last 21 games (5G-13A) against Philadelphia. His plus-33 versus the Flyers is second in NHL history behind Bobby Orr (+37).

This season on the road, Arturs Silovs is undefeated, 2-0-0 and has allowed just two goals in two games, a 1.00 goals-against average, and posted a .965 save percentage. Silovs’ save percentage on the road ranks first in the NHL (min. 2 road GP).

Evgeni Malkin is on a seven-game point streak (3-8-11).

The Penguins have won three consecutive road games. A win tonight would give them their first four-game road winning streak since going 4-0-0 from Nov. 4-14, 2023.

The Penguins’ 38 goals-for lead the NHL.
