EASTON, Pa.- Northampton County’s elections division is reporting a few hiccups ahead of the upcoming primary election.

Registrar Chris Commini said a “small number of issues” have been identified as the county begins distributing mail-in and absentee ballots for the May 19 Democratic and Republican contests.

Nearly 24,500 ballots were sent out last week. A “limited number” of voters received duplicate ballots due to a labeling mistake, Commini told the county’s election commission during its meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Those voters have been instructed to destroy the extra ballot. Commini pointed out that the county’s machines have safeguards in place to ensure that the second ballot would not be accepted, even if it was submitted.

Also, some Northampton County voters reported receiving an incorrect party ballot, Commini said. Those voters have been provided with the correct ballot.

Finally, one entire precinct received incorrect ballots. “However, this was identified and all affected voters were contacted directly and provided with the correct ballot,” Commini told the commission.

69 News reached out to Northampton County for more information about the exact number of voters impacted but did not immediately hear back. Commini also did not name the impacted precinct during the meeting.

The election commission questioned Commini about how the mistakes happened. He said processes were put in place this round “because of the issues we had last year,” when about 50 voters in Easton’s West Ward received incorrect mail-in ballots ahead of the November 2025 election.

This time, the elections office was able to catch many of the mistakes early and contact the impacted voters before they even received the incorrect ballot in the mail, Commini said, but added, “It’s still a human effort that we have in place, and mistakes got made, but it is our effort to make sure that everybody gets the right to vote, and we want to fix those errors as soon as possible and make it fair for everybody across the board.”

Commini said his office has identified the people who are responsible for the errors, adding, “we’ll handle it internally as to what happens to those individuals.”
