Gas prices around Erie and around the nation jumped more than 38 cents a gallon since last week.
In the first week of May, the price for regular non-leaded gasoline has gone up 42.2 cents since last week, according to GasBuddy, a site that helps consumers find the cheapest gas options in over 150,000 stations across the country.
The average price in the Erie area was $4.649 per gallon as of May 4. This price is 45.3 cents higher than the first week of April and $1.19 higher than a year ago in 2025. AAA.com shows a 44.4 cent rise since the week of April 26.
GasBuddy shows that a year ago in the beginning of May, the average prices in Erie were $3.46 for regular, $3.875 for mid-grade, $4.294 for premium and $4.118 for diesel.
Gas prices in Pennsylvania stood at $4.528 on average on May 4, according to AAA.com, for an increase of more than 36 cents since the week of April 26.
Around Erie, according to GasBuddy, the cheapest gas can be found at Citgo at 12271 E. Main St., in North East where gas is $4.13 as of May 4. The highest price around Erie County can be found at multiple stations for $4.69 per gallon.

Are these prices the highest on record?
The data on GasBuddy shows that highest recorded average price for regular gas Erie was in June of 2022 when it reached $5.035.
The highest recorded average diesel price was in April of 2026 when diesel in Erie was $6.246.
Gas prices rise nationally
The national average gas price has risen 38.2 cents per gallon from the week of April 26 to May 2 to $4.457.
The national average is up 32.6 cents per gallon and stands at $1.31 per gallon higher than a year ago.
The price for mid-grade has increased to $5.044, premium is up to $5.434 and diesel is now at $6.077 a gallon.
A year ago, average gas prices were $3.46 for regular, $3.875 for mid-grade, $4.294 for premium and $4.118 for diesel.
“Gasoline prices rose in every state over the last week, with some of the most significant and fastest increases concentrated in the Great Lakes, where states like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois saw sharp spikes, while Wisconsin experienced more modest gains,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy said.
How are gas prices in areas around Erie?
Around Erie, more places are seeing gas prices above $4.30 a gallon.
In Pittsburgh, the average fuel price rose over 30 cents per gallon to $4.69 per gallon.
In Buffalo, New York, regular fuel is up 28 cents per gallon to $4.39 per gallon.

In Cleveland, Ohio, prices jumped 95.5 cents per gallon in a week, bringing the price to $4.88 per gallon.
In Akron, Ohio, the price is up 99.4 cents from last week bringing the price to $4.90 per gallon.
