Hundreds of students take part in adapted field day at North Pocono High School
More than 450 students participated in Northeast Intermediate Unit 19’s annual adapted field day Thursday at North Pocono High School.
The event is designed for students with special needs, giving them the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities while also showcasing what they’ve learned throughout the school year in adapted physical education classes.
Organizers set up 18 activity stations across the track and football field, offering a range of games and challenges.
Event organizer Keith Toolan said, “So there’s a total of 18 stations on the track and the football field. So, some of them are T-ball, kickball, the parachute, multiple relay races, an obstacle course, some throwing events, some kicking events.”
Toolan added that the day serves as a chance for students to demonstrate their progress.
“It’s just things that we practice all year, and then it’s a showcase for the students to show their family, their friends, any of the other workers, other school districts, how well they’ve done and compete,” he said.
Families and staff were on hand to support the students, many of whom spent the day moving between stations, participating in games and activities.
When asked how much the students were enjoying the event, Toolan said early concerns about the weather quickly faded once the activities began.
“I think they enjoy it. Teachers and kids were worried about the weather, but now that once the stations started the activity, I haven’t heard any complaints. The kids are all smiles, laughing, giving me high fives. So, I think the weather is great today, and I think they’re having a ball,” Toolan said.
