SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — This week is National Small Business Week, and with Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, local shops are seeing support pour in from their communities.

28/22 News visited a Scranton bakery to see how small businesses help keep local traditions alive.

My Mother’s Delicacies has been serving the community for over 73 years. Their rugelach is served nationally, with a recipe that came from a simple beginning.

“Our product is all over, and it’s our owner’s grandmother’s recipe. So, it’s her recipe that she brought, and is a possible forward movement,” said Anthony Romano, baker/bakery cafe manager.

My Mother’s Delicacies is one of many small businesses in the area, with this week being National Small Business Week. Experts say that for every dollar spent at local businesses, 73 cents stays in the community, benefiting others.

“It’s more of a churn, we call that the multiplier effect. When you are spending those dollars locally, it isn’t just those 73 dollars. It’s your neighbors who are then going to use those checks to buy from another small business. So, it has a ripple effect and a bigger impact on the economy,” said President of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Bob Durkin.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, almost half of all Americans work for small businesses, becoming fixtures within their communities. Durkin says it’s another way money stays at home.

“Well, because it is the small business that tend to be homegrown. So, it’s local people, local businesses, local operations, they are hiring and employing individuals from northeastern PA,” said Durkin.

With thousands of small businesses within Scranton alone, it’s these true local shops that help boost local economies and keep money right at home.

Romano says that to be a small business is to have an active relationship with customers and to have pride in where you’re from.

“We represent the community, and the community represents us. So, we give, and they give back. It’s a give and take,” said Romano.
