The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing former Washington Commanders safety Darrick Forrest to their practice squad after a tryout yesterday, the team announced. Forrest, 26, is a rangy free safety that also brings special teams value to the team.

He was with the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts at different points this season but has failed to stick on either roster. Forrest was with the Bills for most of training camp before being released.

He is an experienced safety, too. A fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati in the 2021 NFL Draft, Forrest has started 17 games over his NFL career, with 59 total games played. For most of those games, he has played as a free safety.

The move comes after rough play from Chuck Clark and Juan Thornhill, while safety DeShon Elliott is likely to be placed on injured reserve with a knee injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season.

Forrest checks in at 5-foot-11, 206 pounds and ran a 4.42 40-yard dash with a 39-inch vertical coming out of college, showcasing just how explosive Forrest can be as an athlete.

That is something the Steelers have lacked throughout their safety room and secondary, and so it could give Forrest a runway to potentially coming in and competing for a roster spot if other players continue to fail.
