Lansdowne Borough Council recently recognized Mayor Magdalena Huertas Byrne for her leadership as the first Latina mayor of Lansdowne and the first Latina mayor in Pennsylvania.
The recognition took place during the council meeting on Wednesday, May 6, with Council President Jessica M. Pointer presenting an official proclamation honoring the mayor’s achievement and continued service to the community, according to a news release.

Huertas Byrne, who is Puerto Rican, took office in 2022. She has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Latino Conventionthrough its ALMA Heritage Initiative: Preserving, Protecting & Promoting Latino History in Pennsylvania.
As part of this statewide effort, Mayor Huertas Byrne is being highlighted among Pennsylvania’s Latino trailblazers, acknowledging leaders who have broken barriers and shaped the commonwealth’s civic landscape.
“This recognition is not only about one individual, but about what it represents for our community and for the future of leadership in Pennsylvania,” Pointer said.
The mayor said, “I am incredibly humbled by the recognition I received from State Rep. Gina Curry, Lansdowne Borough Council, and the Lansdowne Police Department. But more than anything, I’m grateful to this community for believing in me, supporting me, and allowing me to serve the town I love so much.”
