Athletes from Dunmore, who had an outstanding spring, will look to get off to a fast start in pursuit of the program’s first boys District 2 Class 2A Track and Field title since 1991, when action begins at the two-day championship meet.
Juniors Weston Yannone, Josh Dudick and Carter Sload each etched their names into the Dunmore school-record book this season. They will all compete Monday in medal-winning and state-qualifying finals at Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Last season, Dunmore finished second to Mid Valley in the Class 2A boys team standings.
All winners and any athlete who equals or betters the state-qualifying standard advances to the PIAA Track and Field Championships on May 22-23 at Shippensburg University.
Day 1 features finals in 14 field events in two sessions at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Races on the track will include finals in the 3,200-meter relay, the 300 hurdles and the 3,200. Preliminary heats for the short hurdles and sprints will start at 3 p.m.
Yannone had the top hand-held time of the regular season in the 300 hurdles with his school-record effort of 38.24. That is the second-best school record in LTC history behind Delaware Valley’s CJ Anderson (37.77).
However, the standout athlete tumbled on the final hurdle at the Robert Spagna Championships. That allowed Western Wayne’s Robert Carrelle to cross in first place with a school-record time of 39.12.
All eyes will be on the middle lanes in the rematch that is tentatively scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
The two top hurdlers in the LTC, Yannone and Carrelle, will also be running in preliminary races of the 110 hurdles.
Dudick, the Dunmore record holder in the long jump (22 feet, 3 inches), will compete in the Class 2A long and high jumps. He won the Spagna championship on his final attempt, inching past Montrose’s Max Kuwaye.
Last season, Dudick finished second to Riverside junior Brayden Rose in the long jump.
Sload set a Dunmore record with his season-best clearance of 6-6. He won the Robert Spagna title at 6-4. Dudick and Elk Lake’s Brody Crisman also cleared 6-4, but had more misses at lower heights.
At last season’s District 2 meet, Dudick and Sload each cleared 6-4, as did Mid Valley graduate Jakob Lesher, the champion on fewer misses. All three advanced to the PIAA meet by hitting the qualifying standard, and Dudick earned a seventh-place medal.
Elk Lake senior Kendel Jones, last season’s Times-Tribune Boys Track and Field Performer of the Year, will be part of the 3,200 relay final that is the first medal awarded. He will also compete as the defending Class 2A champion in the 3,200.
Mid Valley freshman star Olivia Thomas competes in the Class 2A high jump during the 3 p.m. session and the long jump at 5 p.m. On the track, she will be in the preliminary races of the 100 hurdles.
Lakeland’s Kaylyn Davis, the defending champion and PIAA medal winner last season, will throw the javelin in the Class 2A meet. She will be in a battle with Montrose’s Sadie Jones, the Spagna champion in the event, who will also compete in the long jump.
In addition, Davis will race in the finals of the 300 hurdles, an event she won at the Spagna Championships, at an estimated start time of 5:50 p.m. Last season, Mid Valley’s Natalie Talluto won the gold medal, but the Army commit has had an injury that sidelined her for most of the season.
Nanticoke Area’s Nevaeh Brown, the defending champion who leaped 40-4, will highlight the Class 3A meet.
Abington Heights’ Anna Pucilowski, the Spagna champion, will race in the final of the 3,200.
Crestwood’s Anson Jumper and Abington Heights freshman Anthony Piccotti are expected to have a battle in the Class 3A boys pole vault.
