The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has announced a leadership transition for the U.S. Brig Niagara as the historic vessel prepares for its long-anticipated return to its homeport and the next phase of its storied service.
Captain Greg Bailey, who has overseen the ship during a critical period of preservation and repair, will step down as the vessel’s Master effective June 1, 2026. PHMC expressed its full support for his decision and extended sincere appreciation for his leadership and dedication to the Commonwealth’s flagship.
To guide the Niagara safely home, PHMC has appointed Interim Captain Richard Bailey (no relation), a seasoned mariner with more than 45 years of experience commanding tall ships. His distinguished career includes 16 years as Master of the H.M.S. Rose, underscoring his expertise in handling historic square-rigged vessels.
Under Captain Greg Bailey’s leadership, the vessel has undergone an extensive repair and restoration process in Maine, which is now nearing completion. He will remain with the ship through the end of May to ensure a smooth and professional transition, working closely with Interim Captain Richard Bailey during the handover period.
PHMC emphasized that maintaining operational continuity is a top priority as the Niagara prepares for its return voyage. The appointment of an experienced interim captain ensures the ship remains in capable hands during this transition.
Meanwhile, the Commission has begun the search for a permanent Master. Due to the highly specialized nature of commanding a 19th-century square-rigged sailing vessel, the agency is seeking an exceptionally qualified candidate who can provide long-term stability and leadership for the ship’s next chapter.
In the coming months, PHMC will focus on several key milestones, including the vessel’s return transit to Erie, the uprigging of the ship, and the completion of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Certificate of Inspection. These steps are essential to returning the Niagara to full operational status.
With a comprehensive transition plan in place and experienced leadership at the helm, PHMC officials are confident the U.S. Brig Niagara is well-positioned for a successful and vibrant future. The ship will continue to serve as a floating ambassador of Pennsylvania’s maritime heritage and a centerpiece of educational and public programming for years to come.
