IT’S, YOU KNOW, NOT THE GREATEST HERE AT NIGHT, UNFORTUNATELY, PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SAFETY SAYS A MAN WAS FOUND SHOT IN THE CHEST AND RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION, WHERE HE HAD TO GET SURGERY. OFFICIALS SAID THE MAN DIED. INVESTIGATORS SAID THE MAN WAS IN AN ALTERCATION WITH ANOTHER MAN HE KNEW PRIOR TO THE SHOOTING. A late-night shooting in downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square left one person dead, prompting discussions about safety in the area following multimillion-dollar renovations.Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said the man was found shot in the chest and rushed to a hospital, where he later died. Investigators said the victim had been in an altercation with another man he knew prior to the shooting.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 asked Mayor Corey O’Connor how the violence can be stopped in Market Square. “Obviously, we’ve a long way to go, and last night was a bad day,” he said. “I think what we’ve seen over the last couple of weekends, trying to make progress, and looking at whether new systems will work in the future, and just taking our time and seeing whether other alternatives will work out.”The shooting comes after significant investments were made to improve Market Square.”It’s not the greatest here at night, unfortunately,” said Lindsey Burgess, who works nearby.”They put so much energy and money into everything down here, so it’s just kind of a shame, but not surprising,” she said.Despite the incident, some residents said they feel safer in the area now.”There are some weird things that go on every once in a while, but for the most part, I do feel pretty safe here,” said Hannah Burke, of Downtown.”I think there’s still a lot of stuff they can do to make the area safer.
