PITTSBURGH, PA — A reporter for a popular Pittsburgh TV program is departing.
Katie O’Malley announced via social media on Wednesday that she is leaving “Pittsburgh Today Live,” which airs weekdays on KDKA-TV.
“Over the past 2 1/2 years, I had the honor of serving the city as a reporter for Pittsburgh Today Live, showcasing the exciting this happening throughout our city and region and the extraordinary people that make Pittsburgh so special,” she stated in a Facebook post.
“I truly loved being part of Team PTL and I’m beyond grateful for this chapter in my journey. Thank you to everyone who opened your homes, your businesses and your hearts so I could share your story and shine a light on the incredible things happening around our beloved town. I loved every minute of it.
“My time on PTL may have come to an end, but my love affair with this city and its people is stronger than steel. Love yinz.”
O’Malley did not provide a reason for her departure or detail what her next professional move will be. However, the timing of her leaving has fueled speculation she might be in line for a job in the administration of Corey O’Connor, the Democratic Allegheny County controller who is the prohibitive favorite to win the Nov. 4 Pittsburgh mayoral election.
O’Malley served as deputy press secretary for five years under former Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, the predecessor to current Mayor Ed Gainey, whom O’Connor defeated in the Democratic mayoral primary in May.
She is married to Kevin Acklin, who was Peduto’s chief of staff from 2014 to 2018 and then became president of business operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He left that position in July to join the Stevens & Lee law firm in Pittsburgh.
