SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With rain in the forecast, Scranton is making sure its flood protection systems work. The city will test its levee flood closure and flood siren systems on Friday.

Closing the emergency flood walls will cause some traffic disruptions at each location during testing.

The city wants to remind everyone this is just a test to make sure the systems are up and running in case of a real emergency.

“So you know, being able to close these structures in a timely fashion to protect the communities that are behind the federal levee system is crucial, and the only way we can get better if it is actually exercising that process,” Scranton Fire Department Chief John Judge explained.

Drivers are advised that the following roads will be impacted by the testing and to find alternate routes:

Parker Street bridge between Amelia Avenue and Carter Avenue

Sanderson Avenue bridge between Race Street and Detty Street

Albright Avenue bridge between Court Street and Meylert Avenue

Poplar Street bridge between Sanderson Avenue and 7th Avenue

Olive Street bridge between Gordon Avenue and Love Road

Testing will begin Friday at 9:00 a.m. and last until about 2:00 p.m.
