3 Adams County Democrats trying to flip Pennsylvania House seat

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – Three candidates are on the Democratic primary ballot for Pennsylvania’s 91st House District. The Republican primary ballot for that seat also has three candidates.

What issues are you running on?

“I work in agriculture, so it’s very personal to me,” said Tony Nunez-Guzman. “I’ve interacted with many people who have all their documentation and stuff, and they’re just, either through fear, leaving, or being picked up and then you don’t see them again.”

“My top priorities are, number one, getting corruption out of politics,” said Darian Sundberg. “I think there’s a lot we can do in the state to remove funding from corporations and big banks and moneyed interests to our politicians. We can make a gift ban.”

“Something that’s really important to me are strong public schools and also sensible taxation,
Kathleen Pratt said. “What I’d like to work on in my first year as state representative is identifying a special revenue stream that can infuse much needed dollars into public education right now.”

How would your professional background help in Harrisburg?

“With my current job, I go and I see what is not working, I identify the problem and then I write recommendations for how to fix that problem, and I work with a bunch of people doing this because I’m working with a department head, I’m working with the plant manager, I’m working with employees, so I have a very collaborative style,” said Nunez-Guzman.

“Gas prices don’t know if you’re a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or another party,” Pratt said. “I may know what party you are, but I don’t care. I know the challenges that we face and part of those challenges is really the increased prices that we pay every day. Every time we turn around, prices are just escalating, and that’s really hard for people. I have the skill set based on my career experience, to really work on those challenges and try to make life better and frankly more affordable.”

“I’m also a renter,” Sundberg said. “I experience the housing crisis myself.

“We need to implement maybe a vacancy tax to make sure that if there’s homes or rentals on the market, that are available,” Sundberg said. “If they’re not available, then the landlord should be paying to towards tax credits to people who are paying higher rents because of those vacancies.”

Pratt is a business professor. She previously taught at HACC for almost 20 years. She currently sits on the Gettysburg Area School Board. Sundberg is an art teacher for at-risk youth.

“I’ve also taught in Japan for a couple of years,” Sundberg said. “My work over there, I earned sort of a unofficial ambassadorship, a goodwill ambassadorship for the the prefecture of Toyama for my multicultural work, and bridging United States communities with Japan communities.”

What is your stance on data centers?

“From all the research that I’ve done on these, on this issue, whether it is the increase in utility, electricity and water, and the lack of evidence that people actually want AI in their phones and on their email and all of these other things,” said Nunez-Guzman. “Make sure that people are protected from corporations trying to use it to replace people, and I just want to make sure that we’re using our resources like water for people, not computers.”

“Data centers are a drain on natural resources and a financial burden on residents who suffer increased electricity costs,” Pratt said. “Regulatory oversight is needed.”

“I believe a moratorium is important to ensure we have enough time to research the damages that could that these businesses can have on our society,” Sundberg said.

Sundberg also says he is pro-green energy and believes solar farms should be installed on land that has already been developed, like in parking lots.

All three candidates support implementing term limits. Incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Moul has held the 91st House District seat for 20 years.
