(WHTM) – More than 363,000 mail ballots have been returned ahead of Pennsylvania’s May 19 primary election.
According to data released by the Pennsylvania Department of State on May 8, there have been 840,222 ballot applications approved. There have been 604,972 mail ballots requested by registered Democrats and 226,206 ballots requested by registered Republicans.
Additionally, 9,044 other applications were submitted.
The upcoming election is a “closed” primary, meaning only registered Republicans and Democrats can vote unless there is a special election or ballot measure.
Allegheny County saw the most applications approved, with 110,906. The fewest is in Forest County, with only 204 applications approved so far.
As of 8 a.m. on May 8, there have been 363,324 ballots (or 43.24% of those requested) returned to county boards of election. Voters have until May 12 to apply for a mail ballot.

Voters across the state will have the opportunity to vote for their party’s nominee for governor, the United States House of Representatives, and their local state house and senate leaders.
In Pennsylvania, there are six competitive primaries for Congress this year, with five incumbents being challenged by a member of their own party. The 3rd Congressional District seat in Philadelphia is being vacated by retiring Congressman Dwight Evans (D), who suffered a stroke two years ago.
Eight Democrats are on the ballot in the 3rd District; however, Morgan Cephas and David Oxman have both dropped out. Sharif Street, Christopher Rabb, and Ala Stanford are considered by many to be the leading candidates.

Governor Josh Shapiro (D) and Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R) are the only candidates on the ballot in their party’s respective primaries for governor.
