Erie School District to ban cellphones in classrooms

Erie School District is cracking down on the use of outside technology in the classroom.

The board of directors voted unanimously Wednesday night to adopt new policy that would confiscate items like cellphones, headphones and tablets at the beginning of the day, returning them when school lets out.

It’s a policy that several local school districts already follow in an effort to promote distraction free classrooms.

Assistant Superintendent of the Erie School District, Teresa Szumigala, said, “If they are brought to school they will be stored. We are still working on what that’s exactly going to look at, but we’re encouraging students to keep that at home. We can provide everything that they need with the equipment that they have.”

The policy won’t go into effect right away.

Now, school admin will work to find the best way to enforce the rule.
