Upper Darby police continue the investigation into the apparent accidental gunshot death of a 14-year-old middle school student.
Police and EMS were called Thursday about 1:40 p.m. to the 100 block of Springton Road for a shooting.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said the victim was one of four juveniles in a bedroom of the house where a handgun was discovered.
A single shot was fired, striking the girl in the head. She was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, however she was declared deceased.
The three other juveniles fled the home, Bernhardt said.
The superintendent stressed the need to safely lock weapons. Police have free gun locks for those who need them.
Bernhardt also said youth need to realize, they don’t get a “redo.”
“I wish kids would realize the danger of a firearm, and here is an incident no one can take back. You don’t get a redo. Someone lost their life, and three other juveniles are going to have to live with this,” he said.
Bernhardt said the investigation continues. Police are interviewing the other juveniles present to determine what occurred.
No charges have been filed as of Friday afternoon.
