Floodgates tested to prepare for emergency

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Scranton tested out its flood defenses Friday.

City crews tested levee closures and warning sirensas part of emergency preparedness.

Several bridges were closed for the morning commute in parts of the electric city because of it.
Neighbors say they’re thankful for the protection.

“Right when it starts raining, the whole streets flood… and they do, when they flood, they come right up to your ankles, but thanks to the success of this last project for sure, you don’t even worry about it,” Kristopher Klapatch of Scranton said.

In Pennsylvania, the DEP and PEMA make it mandatory to test flood gates and sirens periodically throughout the year.
