A fire ripped through a group of homes on West 14th Avenue in Homestead just past midnight Monday, forcing several people to evacuate.Watch the report from Homestead in the video aboveKristin Baker said she first noticed the fire when she went to check on her 2-year-old son. “I went in his room and I smelled a faint hint of wood burning. I stepped out of his room and I didn’t smell it, and then I went back in his room and smelled it,” Baker said. She says she then rushed outside and saw the flames. “As I opened the door, I felt heat and looked to my right, and I could see that there was flames just pouring out of the second house from the end,” Baker said. After getting her family out safely, Baker said her thoughts turned to their 80-year-old neighbor. “The flames were so big. I was trying to get to her door, and I couldn’t. But thankfully, she just, like, ran out of her door. We renovated it completely from 2016 to 2018, it took us two years, so to see it kind of dissipate rather quickly is really upsetting and disheartening,” Sean Baker said. Kristin Baker says it’s unclear what they lost, but what came to mind was their child’s baby blanket. “I just think about the blanket that I had when I brought my son home from the hospital, things like that. But I have my son. I’ll take him over the blanket,” she said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Kristin Baker said she first noticed the fire when she went to check on her 2-year-old son.
