(WJET/WFXP)– Medical emergencies and crime can happen every day, but calling 911 might not be the best option, as the City of Erie and its police department pointed out.

The Erie Police Department is looking to remind the public about when you should call 911 and when to call their non-emergency line when reporting a crime.

For calling 911, Erie police said to call immediately if there’s a situation that involves danger to life, active threats, serious injury, fire, or a crime in progress.

As for the non-emergency line, Erie police said it’s best to call their number to report a past crime with no current danger, noise complaints, questions about police information or service and to report loose animals.

Finally, Erie police said, when in doubt, call 911 if someone is in immediate danger. Their non-emergency line can be called at 814-870-1120.
