PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — Pennsylvanians are being encouraged to make a plan to vote ahead of the primary election tomorrow, May 19.

Polls will open across the Commonwealth at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Voters are reminded that if they are in line by 8 p.m., they will be allowed to cast their ballot. All completed mail ballots must be returned to county election boards by 9 p.m. in order to be counted.

Things to know before heading to the polls:

If a voter requested a mail ballot but decides to vote in person instead, they can surrender their ballot materials, including the outer envelope, at their polling place and vote there.

First-time voters and those voting for the first time in a new precinct must show identification.

Voters who have been told by their county that their mail ballot may not be counted due to an error – such as a missing signature or secrecy envelope – may vote by provisional ballot at their polling place.

“As always, the Department of State wants to ensure that voters can make their voices heard and cast their ballots safely and securely,” Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt said. “We want every voter to be informed about how to exercise their right to vote in tomorrow’s primary election.”

While Pennsylvania has a closed primary, meaning that Democrats and Republicans can only vote for their party’s nominees, all voters will be able to vote on any constitutional amendment questions, ballot questions or special elections within specific districts.
