Pittsburgh Public Schools board will vote on plan to close schools
SPIRITED TREK TO CLASS THIS MORNING. WALKING, BIKING, EVEN HOVERBOARDING. THE RAIN DIDN’T STOP. STUDENTS AT PITTSBURGH LINCOLN PRE K THROUGH FIVE FROM MEETING AT LIBERTY GREEN PARK AND RIDING INTO SCHOOL TODAY. WE’VE DONE THIS FOR A COUPLE YEARS NOW, BUT NOW I HAVE A TEACHER THAT HAS TAKEN OVER TO MEET KIDS TO BRING THEM ON THEIR BIKES, SCOOTERS, HOVERBOARDS, WHATEVER THEY LIKE TO GO AND JUST BRING THEM SAFELY TO SCHOOL. WALKING AND ROLLING. IT’S PART OF WALK AND ROLL TO SCHOOL, AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT PROMOTES ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION, RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL, AND ENCOURAGES HEALTHY HABITS FOR STUDENTS. HOW IS IT? DO WE NEED TO FIX ANYTHING ON YOUR WALK? NO, NO. IT’S GOOD. MAYOR COREY O’CONNOR WAS IN ATTENDANCE AND SAYS THEY’RE WORKING TO LEARN ABOUT SOME OF THE GAPS FAMILIES SEE ON THEIR WAY INTO SCHOOLS. WHETHER IT’S, YOU KNOW, CURB CUTS, SIDEWALKS, YOU KNOW, TREE FELL DOWN BLOCKING SOMEBODY’S ACCESS, ALL OF THOSE LITTLE DETAILS MATTER. AND I THINK IT’S GOOD TO GET A PERSPECTIVE OF WHERE THE KIDS ARE ALL WALKING FROM IN DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS. THE EVENT HAPPENED AT PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS ACROSS THE CITY, BUT IT WAS ESPECIALLY IMPACTFUL AT LINCOLN ELEMENTARY, WHICH IS A WALKING SCHOOL. A LOT OF MY KIDS JUST WALK BY THEMSELVES, SO IT MAKES THEM FEEL MUCH SAFER AND MAKES THEM ACTUALLY KNOW WHERE THE COMMUNITY AROUND THE COMMUNITY AND HOW TO GET HERE. The Pittsburgh Public Schools school board is set to vote on the “Future Ready Facilities Plan” — a proposal that could close several schools in the district in the coming years.If approved, seven schools would close at the end of the 2026-2027 school year. This includes the Student Achievement Center (Baxter School), Pittsburgh Friendship, Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8, Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8, Pittsburgh Fulton PreK-5, Pittsburgh McKelvy (Miller PreK-5), and Pittsburgh Woolslair PreK-5. Spring Hill PreK-5 and Pittsburgh Morrow would close at the end of the 2028-2029 school year, following the completion of the North View PreK-5 renovation project.The board previously voted against the plan in November, citing unanswered questions.School officials say closing schools is urgent due to declining enrollment and financial strain. The plan aims to save the district more than $100 million and make each student’s experience more equitable.The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
