Erie County election officials wrapped up voting operations Tuesday night, as ballot counting continued at the county courthouse following a day of primary races that will help shape the November election.
According to the final election report released shortly after polls closed, overall voter turnout reached 20.63% across the county.
Throughout the day, voters headed to the polls to cast ballots in several key primary elections. The outcomes will determine which candidates advance to the general election this fall.
Preliminary data showed a clear disparity in party participation. Democratic voters accounted for the majority of ballots cast, with 23,499 votes, compared to 12,606 ballots cast by Republicans.
Election officials also noted a surprising trend in how ballots were submitted this year. For the Democratic Party, more voters chose to mail in their ballots rather than vote in person, a shift that stood out to officials monitoring turnout patterns.
Crews continued processing and verifying ballots into the evening to ensure all votes were accurately counted. Erie County Clerk and Clerk of Elections Karen Chillcott provided an update on the ballot-counting process and emphasized the importance of accuracy and transparency as results were finalized.
Officials stated that while turnout was modest, every vote played a role in shaping the decisions that will impact the community in the months ahead.
