SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say his 10-year-old son shot himself in the hand with a gun that was allegedly left out within reach.
56-year-old Michael Lemongello was arrested and charged with child endangerment after his son shot himself in the hand with a pistol, police stated.
The incident occurred on May 19 at a home on Cherry Street in Scranton.
According to the affidavit, Lemongello left his loaded 9 mm Taurus gun on a shelf next to his bed. Lemongello told police that he stepped away from the room, then heard the gunshot, as stated in court documents.
The victim said he grabbed the gun, unaware that it was loaded, and the shot went through his palm, officers reported. He is in stable condition and was taken to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest.
Police say the mother of the victim claimed that Lemongello refused to call 911 and had warned him to secure his gun because the 10-year-old is “curious and always touching everything.”
