A long-anticipated plan to bring a new marketplace development to Erie’s Bayfront is on hold following a decision by Erie City Council.
In a four to two vote, council members denied a resolution requesting waterfront conditional use approval, a key step needed for the project to move forward. The request had been submitted by the Erie County Convention Center Authority, which oversees Erie Events and manages the nearby Bayfront Convention Center.
The proposed multi-million-dollar marketplace was slated for the former GAF property and aimed to create a centralized destination featuring retail shops, food vendors, a bakery, and other local businesses. Supporters envisioned it as a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike, helping to further activate the Bayfront.
The project had previously secured significant backing. In October, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced a $9.5 million state grant to support the development, signaling strong state-level interest in revitalizing the area.
Officials have 30 days to file an appeal, which could potentially revive the proposal or lead to further negotiations.
For now, the marketplace plan years in the making has been paused, leaving questions about what will come next for development along Erie’s Bayfront.
