Troy officials are holding a public safety meeting Thursday night to address the city’s updated policy concerning the use of license plate reader cameras.
The district attorney and police chief will be at the 5:30 p.m. meeting to answer questions.
The cameras have been at the center of a firestorm between Mayor Carmella Mantello and City Council President Sue Steele.
Earlier this year, the mayor declared a state of emergency after the city council refused to fund the city’s contract with Flock. The city council then sued over that decision.
The new framework introduced this week includes an explicit ban on using the cameras for immigrant-related enforcement or monitoring first-amendment protected activities. It also includes annual audits of the system.
Mantello says the new policy is tied to a commitment to both public safety and civil liberties. Steele says the council is still working on legislation tied to the cameras.
