There was no stopping Josh Sharp on Saturday afternoon at the PIAA Class 3A Championships.

The Upper Darby senior roared away from the pack in the final lap and beat the time posted by an earlier heat to win a state title in the 800 meters at Shippensburg University.

Sharp went 1:51.44 to edge Wallenpaupack’s Aiden Janowicz by 0.08 second and Joseph Murphy of Hershey by 0.17 second, both of whom posted times in the second heat of three. All three times are NFHS honor roll marks.

Sharp is the first Delco boy to win this race in Class 3A since Penn Wood’s Mark Fowler in 1984. He’s the first Upper Darby boys state champ in track since Donovan St. Louis in 2015.

Sharp’s final lap was fearsome, a split of 57.01 in a race where no one else cracked 58 seconds. He was chasing the time set by Janowicz and Murphy a heat earlier. He got it with fractions of a second to spare, defeating the others in his section by 1.3 seconds.

The District 1 champion Sharp was joined on the medal stand by Penn Wood’s Ricky Mason, who finished eighth in 1:53.90. The senior was fifth in the third and final section.

Sean Lawson of Haverford finished 20th in the less impressive of the senior’s races on the day, after he helped the Fords’ 4 x 800 earn a silver medal.

The team of Ryan Cleary, Jonathan Awad, Teddy Foster and Lawson went 7:44.31, an NFHS Honor Roll time. They trailed only Mifflin County, which won in 7:42.46. Haverford finished ninth in this race last year, just off the podium.

The Fords were eighth at the midway point but roared into second thanks to Foster’s split of 1:55.37, which was six seconds quicker than Mifflin’s third runner. Lawson charged home in 1:53.50. But a finishing run of 1:47.85 by Carter Smith rallied Mifflin County from sixth to first. Smith entered with the fastest time in Pennsylvania this season in the 800 but didn’t run the individual event.

Penn Wood just missed out on a medal in 11th, with Mason leading off a team that included David Gaylor, Harold Payne and Tawfeeq Fountain. Bonner & Prendergast finished 20th.

The 4 x 400 brought three medals for Delco, led by Upper Darby in third. Timir Johnson, Josiah Gray, David Benda and Charlie Hegarty helped UD go 3:16.87 for third in the concluding relay of the day.

Penn Wood — Mason, Gayflor, Fountain, Desmond Cole — got its relay medal by finishing fourth in 3:30.16.

Bonner & Prendergast was fifth in 3:21.06. Kenyatta Johnson and Daniel Stevens were part of both Bonner relays, joined in the 4 x 400 by Kareem Johnson and Luis Lozano.

Sharp wasn’t the only one to grab gold, joined by Garnet Valley’s 4 x 100 relay.

The quartet of Shane Miller, Cole Hoffacker, Evan McCabe and Jonathan Wert went 41.57 to win, taking one step up on the podium after silver last year. GV entered as the top seed after a 41.12 last week.

This week, they edged Bishop Shanahan by 0.06 second. The Eagles went 41.63, one of four teams under 42 seconds. Strath Haven finished fifth, with Landon Barlow, Gabriel Vite, Luke Glavicic and Derrick Bradley going 42.25.

The Jaguars went 41.68 last year, with Hoffacker, Miller and Wert held over from that squad.

Garnet Valley is the first Delco school to win this event since Strath Haven in 2012. The Jaguars last week took down that quartet’s county record. It is the first state for a Garnet Valley boy since Wellington Zaza’s hurdles double in 2013.

Wert had an eventful day. The District 1 runner-up in both the 100 and 200 added three states medals, finishing second in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200.

In the 100, Wert went 10.66 in both finals and prelims. He was 0.05 behind champion Chase Guers of Blue Mountain. Third went to Owen J. Roberts’ Matthew Gregory in 10.67, with Damian Greer of Wilson fourth in 10.68. District 1 champ Frank Bediako of Bensalem was eighth. Wert had been third in prelims.

Wert finished sixth in the 200 in 21.88 seconds. Gregory won in 21.29, with Guers’ 21.59 second. Wert entered as the fifth seed and finished sixth in prelims.

Wert finished fifth in the 100 meters and 12th in the 200 at states last year.

Silver was Delco’s color on the day. In addition to Wert and the Haverford relay, Felicia Grimmelbein finished second in the 300 hurdles. The Garnet Valley senior ran 42.37, the second-fastest time in Delco history and just off the county record of 42.17 she set last week at districts.

Grimmelbein was second to Spring Grove’s Ella Bahn, who went 41.29, within two-tenths of the state record. Grimmelbein beat District 1 champ Aydriane Bowden of Kennett, who went 42.91.

Grimmelbein’s time is an NFHS Honor Roll mark.

Second is also where Penncrest’s Ryan Gallagher landed in the long hurdles. The senior had been the top out of prelims with a time of 37.71, 0.08 up on Springfield-Montco’s Caden Bronson. But Bronson got the better of him in the finals in 37.77, Gallagher second in 38.22. It’s a big step up from sixth place last year.

Upper Darby’s 4 x 400 relay hit its goal of taking down the school record by breaking 3:50 to secure silver.

Ovviya Lauderdale, Tajai Powell, Laila Fofana and Kadi Golembiewski went 3:49.55, the fourth-fastest performance by a Pennsylvania squad all season. Only Cumberland Valley’s 3:48.88 bested them, but UD was nearly 4.5 seconds clear of third-place Central Bucks East.

The Royals were seventh after the opening leg but led at the midway point. Cumberland Valley went to the lead on the third leg, but Upper Darby was never strongly challenged for silver. Powell ran 56.20 on the second leg, Golembiewski 56.06 on the anchor.

Lauderdale, Powell and Golembiewski were part of a Royals quartet that finished fourth last year in 3:53.94.

Chester senior Damira Allen earned her fourth straight medal in the 100-meter hurdles. Last year’s champion finished third in 14.20 seconds, her third states bronze.

Springfield’s Kali Alli-Kelly finished eighth in 15.41. Bahn won in 13.80, with District 1 champ Bowden second in 14.04.

Upper Darby added two medals in the 110 hurdles. Daniel Chukwu finished fourth in 14.57 seconds, with teammate Kenny Virtue seventh in 15.06.

Ridley just missed a medal in the girls 4 x 800, the team of Maya Bathrant, Cecilia Kane, Lilliana Byrne and Joy Onyewuchi ninth. The Green Raiders went 9:27.93, good for eighth in the final heat of three, but they were a second behind Fox Chapel, winner of Heat 2.

Springfield finished 13th in 9:32.98. Strath Haven was 20th.

Haverford sophomore Maddie Clune was just outside the medals in the 3A javelin. She finished 12th with a throw of 113 feet, 6 inches. Landon Waller of Cardinal O’Hara was 21st in the 3A boys discus in 134-9.

Himien Jones of Archbishop Carroll medaled in the 2A boys 800 meters, his time of 1:55.82 good for fourth. Teammate Markell Houston was 25th.

Delco Christian’s Luke Confino finished eighth in the Class 2A boys 110 hurdles in 15.11. Archbishop Carroll sophomore Shane Allison finished 20th in the 2A boys shot put.
