ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Monday marks Memorial Day, a time to remember those who lost their lives to protect our freedoms.
This weekend, Parkland High School hosted a field of honor.
500 flags were planted for the Rotary Club of Allentown West’s second annual Flags for Unity event.
“We’ve put 500 United States flags in the field and people dedicate those flags to their heroes,” says Herb Klotz, Chair, Flags for Unity.
People can adopt or purchase a flag.
Money raised goes back into the community toward programs that fight food insecurity and help veterans.
Some community members sponsored multiple flags.
“The one that’s probably most dear to my heart is my uncle who fought in WWII,” says Gail Micca, Halo/ Flag Sponsor
Commemorations started Thursday and wrapped up on Memorial Day with a solemn closing ceremony.
“It gives the opportunity for people to recognize the sacrifices, the individual sacrifices that service members made in the line of duty,” says Dr. Benjamin Lobst a keynote speaker and retired army sergeant.
“These are individual lives lost in order for us to have freedom and us to continue on living our lives, that somebody sacrificed their life for us,” says Dr. Lobst.
