PITTSBURGH — Aer Lingus launched its first nonstop flight service between Dublin and Pittsburgh International Airport on Monday, expanding transatlantic travel options for the region.
The inaugural flight, operating under the callsign Shamrock, landed in Pittsburgh at 6:40 p.m. with pilots waving local sports banners from the cockpit. The arrival marks the first time Western Pennsylvania has secured a direct connection to Ireland.
Economic models estimate the year-round service will generate 23 million dollars in annual economic impact for the Pittsburgh area and support more than 150 regional jobs. Several major corporations based in southwestern Pennsylvania, including PPG Industries, BNY, and MSA Safety, maintain significant operations in Ireland. Additionally, the global corporate headquarters of Eaton is located in Dublin, while its electrical business operates out of the Pittsburgh area.
Passengers on the first flights said the service provides a convenient alternative to larger, more crowded transit hubs on the East Coast.
The airline plans to operate the service four times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flights will run year-round with a brief suspension during January and February.
Airport officials hosted a celebration inside the terminal featuring traditional Irish music and dance performances, alongside appearances by local university and professional sports mascots. Representatives from the airline and the airport joined local officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before the first return flight departed for Europe.
A delegation of political and business leaders traveled on the outbound flight to Dublin to promote regional economic ties. The group includes Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato and airport chief executive Christina Cassotis. Regional leaders said they plan to spend several days meeting with Irish government representatives, corporate targets, and tourism coordinators to build support for the new route.
Cultural and sports connections also helped secure the route. The Pittsburgh Steelers, whose ownership family traces its lineage to Ireland, hold marketing rights there and played a regular-season game in Dublin last year. Airline officials noted that the route will also serve football fans traveling to the 2027 college football season opener in Ireland between the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Wisconsin.
The route utilizes an Airbus A321LR aircraft, which is a narrow-body, long-range plane designed to make secondary international markets economically viable. Returning passengers will also be able to complete U.S. customs inspections at the Dublin airport before boarding.
