SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV) – City leaders in Sergeant Bluff have heard the first reading of a new ordinance on electric vehicles, but it’s going back to the drawing board.
At the meeting Tuesday, May 26, the council heard the first reading of updates to chapter 77 of the city code, which focuses on motorized scooters and electric bikes.
The first reading of the updated ordinance failed due to lack of a motion to approve it.
Before approving, the council decided a change from strongly encouraging minors to wear helmets when operating electric vehicles to making them a requirement was needed.
Other proposed updates to the ordinance include prohibiting use of electric scooters in streets, prohibiting electric bikes on sidewalks, and prohibiting children under the age of 10 from using either without supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
City officials say this will be the first update to the code in more than two decades, since 2004.
