The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters have received a $10,000 grant to support their adult literacy center in Reading.

The grant comes from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and will enable the Mother Veronica Adult Education Center at 449 S. Sixth St. to buy instructional materials, renew software licenses and provide specialized teacher training over the next year.

The center provides classes and tutoring in English as a second language, GED preparation, adult basic education, computer training and citizenship preparation.

The grant is part of a record‑setting, single‑day total of nearly $16 million in grants nationwide supporting adult, family and summer literacy programs in the 48 states where Dollar General operates, officials said. The milestone surpasses the foundation’s previous record of more than $13.2 million granted in May 2025.
