LaVelle Nelson, 95, of Scranton, ND, passed away on October 29, 2025 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, MT. LaVelle was born on October 12, 1930, to James and Ellen (Anfinson) Nelson in Hettinger, ND. He was raised on the family ranch near Haley, ND, where he attended grade school. He later graduated from high school in Bowman, ND.

In 1952, LaVelle married Ilabelle Brown in Scranton, ND. Together, they raised two sons, Robert and Dale, while farming and ranching for many years. One of LaVelle’s greatest loves was farming.

LaVelle was passionate about flying and even delivered mail and medical supplies by dropping them from his airplane during harsh winters when roads were impassable. He was always quick to help his neighbors, whether it was working cattle, harvesting, or putting out fires.

LaVelle is survived by his two sons and their wives: Robert (Lori) Nelson of Spearfish, SD, and Dale (Sheila) Nelson of Billings, MT. His grandchildren will dearly miss him: Kyle and Sheila Nelson of Finley, ND; Erin Nelson of Chicago, IL; Scott and Kelsey Nelson of Bozeman, MT; and his great-grandchildren: Jalen (Erin), Isabelle, Sawyer, Oliver, and Tristen (Kyle), Brooklyne, Charleigh, and Bailer (Scott).

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ellen Nelson, and his wife of 61 years, Ilabelle. We will genuinely miss our father, grandfather, and friend. We will treasure the times we spent together.

Although he is no longer with us, his memory will live on in our hearts forever. LaVelle will be remembered for his generosity, love of the land, quick wit, and always having a neighborly tale to tell!

Fly high, LaVelle!
