SCRANTON — Kyleise Kublo probably would have run to the Marketplace at Steamtown to catch a ball.

At times Wednesday, it seemed like she did — patrolling every square inch of artificial turf at the University of Scranton’s Magis Field to make jaw-dropping plays.

Add in her sister, MycKenna, and a gutsy performance by freshman pitcher Alayna Mott, and it spelled a District 2 Class 2A softball title for the Meteors.

The Kublo girls accounted for four runs, and Mott picked up her 100th career strikeout as Montrose pulled away for a 6-2 win over Dunmore to claim the crown.

For Montrose, it was the school’s first softball title since 1994. The Meteors have four district titles, but most of them came when they were classified as District 12. The last time Montrose made states was 1994 when it lost to Parkland, 9-3, in the opening round of the Class 3A bracket.

“This team is amazing. We are so tight, and really, we are a family,” Kyleise Kublo said. “We are together, and I believe that’s how we win games. As long as we are together, we always do so much better.”

Up next for Montrose is the PIAA Class 2A bracket where the Meteors open with District 4 champ Northwest Area, currently undefeated on the season and ranked No. 4 in the state according to the latest Trib HSSN rankings.

“This team is so confident and so positive,” Mott said. “Everyone is always there for each other.”

Entering the postseason, the Meteors were probably the biggest unknowns.

Yes, Montrose ran through Lackawanna League Division III, but sustained losses to both Dunmore and Riverside in nonconference games.

Well, the mystery turned into the champ after breaking a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth inning.

“We did have a lot of people doubting us,” Montrose coach Madelynn Guinane said. “These girls love to prove people wrong. That was a big thing for them. We wanted to stay positive coming into the game, and really prove people wrong who were doubting us.”

Kyleise Kublo would have darted through a brick wall if she had to. She made two eye-popping plays where she ran almost to left field from right-center. But the amazing part was, not only did she field both balls cleanly, she planted her feet to gun one runner out, and just missed another by mere inches.

In most games, that’s probably a stand-up double — except for Wednesday.

It was MycKenna Kublo that plated the game’s first run on a single to center after her sister legged out an infield hit and stole second base to get into scoring position.

The sisters were back at it in the fifth after Dunmore tied the game at 2.

Mott started the inning with a single to center, and Alyse Legg followed with a rip through the right side to bring the Kublo girls to the plate. Kyleise broke the tie with a one-out single that scored courtesy runner Rylee Traver, and after MycKenna drew a walk, it was Libby Bush who ripped a two-out single for the 5-2 lead. MycKenna Kublo later scored on a wild pitch to give the top-seeded Meteors the 6-2 edge.

“They are unbelievable, both as players and as people,” Guinane said of the Kublo sisters. “They are some of the most positive, excited, energetic people on the team. They are fantastic leaders on this team. They are the total package. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen someone run like her (Kyleise). Even on the bases, she’s one of the fastest I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t want to play against her. She covers a lot of ground, has a great glove and her arm is unbelievable.”

Mott was consistent in the circle. Outside of the fifth inning where Dunmore scored one on Jackie Brown’s towering triple down the right-field line and another on an error, the freshman was steady.

She scattered five hits throughout the remainder of the game, and never got rattled as the Lady Bucks were making their comeback.

“I just kept thinking to myself to be confident and that I had this,” Mott said. “You can’t get down. If you strike out, it’s OK. You are going to come back and make a play. I kept my composure, but it was definitely hard. It was a hard-fought game. Everyone behind me, they were just so hyped.”

Even in the seventh when Aubrey Mizenko and Rachel Walsh strung together singles to keep the rally hopes alive, Mott remained in control, coaxing a grounder to shortstop Isabella Owen — who made six putouts in the game.

“As a freshman, it’s stressful and I don’t know if she’s been in a game before with this much stress,” Guinane said of Mott. “She just locked it down. I know she was a little nervous and our catcher really helped to calm her down. Those two together are fantastic. From the start of this year until now, Alayna has improved so much. She’s just been killing it.”
