A man was found to be carrying a handgun after he was shot and killed on Thursday evening, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 30, officers were on patrol in West Philadelphia when they heard gunshots coming from the 4900 block of Reno Street, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. At the same time, the department received a 911 call reporting the gunshots.

The officers responded to the scene in seconds and found a man laying on the front steps of a home bleeding from several gunshot wounds to his chest and legs, Small said.

Police rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead around 8:04 p.m., officials said.

Investigators at the scene have found six spent shell casings on the sidewalk and street that appear to be from a large semi-automatic weapon, Small said.

Small also explained that officials believe the victim was the intended target of the shooting because of how close the spent shell casings were to him.

The victim was found to have a handgun on him when he was shot, Small reported. At this time, investigators do not know if he fired his weapon.

Investigators are hoping to use surveillance camera videos from nearby homes to help them identify possible suspects.

The identity of the victim is unknown at this time.
