RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Rapid City Public Library is kicking off its summer reading program with a dinosaur-themed celebration for families.
The event takes place Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. upstairs at the library and features hands-on activities like fossil digs, “Dino Dirt Cups,” prehistoric dioramas, and even a frozen dinosaur excavation.
Starting at 10:30 a.m., experts from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research will give short dinosaur and fossil talks every 30 minutes through 12:30 p.m. A Jurassic Park–themed photo booth will also be available throughout the event.
The kickoff launches the library’s summer reading program, which encourages kids to read 15 minutes a day starting June 1. Participants who complete reading logs in June and July can earn small prizes, free books, and entries into larger prize drawings.
Library officials say the program is designed to keep kids reading and help reduce summer learning loss heading into the next school year.
More details are available through the Rapid City Public Library’s event listings.
