Once tabled because of budget concerns, the Brevard Police Department is reconsidering using license plate reading (LPR) cameras, thanks in part to a LPR maker offering three cameras at no cost.

During a city Public Safety Committee meeting, Police Chief Christy Wentzell said LPR firm Axon made the free camera offer as an incentive for the city to buy the company’s tasers and body cameras. Wentzell said the company is trying to gain a “foothold” in a business field dominated by Flock, the industry leader in LPRs. Even if offered at no cost, the city would still need to sign a multi-year agreement with Axon. Tasers and body cameras are a higher priority for the department than the sometimes controversial cameras although the Axon offer may be difficult to refuse. Wentzell has previously said the devices – “an extra set of eyes” – have proven to quickly help solve crimes by as much as 20% or more. She reiterated that to the committee. She called the cameras “a good investigative tool.” The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office already uses LPRs throughout the county.
