SCRANTON, LACKWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Former Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright is scheduled to be released from federal custody on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, completing his sentence for corruption-related charges.
Courtright, who served as mayor from 2014 until his resignation in 2019, pleaded guilty in July 2019 to conspiracy, bribery, and extortion. Prosecutors said he accepted bribes from local business owners in exchange for city contracts and other official favors.
He was sentenced in October 2020 to seven years in federal prison, fined $25,000, and ordered to serve three years of supervised release.
In August 2024, Courtright was transferred from prison to home confinement under supervision by the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ residential re-entry program. His scheduled release this week marks the formal end of his custody period.
Courtright’s conviction followed a federal investigation into corruption at Scranton City Hall and led to his resignation midway through his second term.
