(WHTM) – Pennsylvania is looking to fill two leadership positions to oversee the state’s horse racing operations.

The state posted two “Director of Horse Racing” positions on May 29. A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says the previous directors – Tom Chuckas and Tony Salerno – are no longer employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the department would “not comment on personnel matters.”

According to the job descriptions, Pennsylvania’s Directors of Horse Racing oversee the administrative and enforcement operations for the Bureaus of Standardbred and Thoroughbred Horse Racing, and operate under the review of the State Horse Racing Commission.

Pennsylvania’s Directors of Horse Racing also oversee “equine regulatory racing activities related to enforcement, licensing, marketing, breeding incentive programs, and procurement” as well as development and implementation of policies and licenses.

Other duties include enforcing racing laws, directing the equine drug-testing program, reviewing racetrack changes, and overseeing the processing of breeding incentive award payments, among other duties.

“Work is performed with a high degree of independence, and is subject to review by administrative supervisors and the State Horse Racing Commission for effectiveness,” the job descriptions say.

The positions also require five years of experience managing a licensed Thoroughbred or Standardbred horse racing entity or equivalent racing experience. Candidates may also have certification as a Thoroughbred or Standardbred horse-racing official, or other criteria established by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission.

Candidates for the jobs are said to need a background in investigation and law enforcement, management, budgeting, and other key managerial skills.

The pay starts at $100,773 and ranges up to $153,098 for both positions.

Pennsylvania has three Thoroughbred tracks, including Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Dauphin County, and three Standardbred tracks. There is also harness racing at 16 agricultural county fairs.

Pennsylvania’s State Horse Racing Commission represents the state’s racing industry and is currently made up of 10 members, including Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding.
