GREENSBURG, Pa. (WBOY) — The Flying WV is spreading even further beyond the Mountain State’s borders, as WVU Health System has reached an agreement to eventually acquire five hospitals in southwest Pennsylvania.
In a release on Tuesday, WVU Health System and Independence Health System announced that they have signed an agreement that will merge the two systems under the WVU banner.
Hospitals in the Independence system include Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland Hospitals, which have a combined bed count of 925 with more than 1,000 physicians.

As part of the agreement, WVU has committed to invest $800 million into the new hospitals that it will acquire, including the installation of a new electronic medical record system, facility upgrades and expansions and “enhanced clinical capabilities designed to improve access to care and broaden the services available to patients across the region,” the release said.
The deal is expected to close in either September or October, building on WVU Health System’s 25 existing facilities it owns across four states.
