UNION TWP., Pa. – The Diocese of Allentown says it is closing a school in Berks County at the end of the school year.

Immaculate Conception Academy in Union Township will close at the end of the current school year, in June 2026, the diocese said in a news release.

The diocese says Father Adam Sedar, Pastor, announced the closure in a letter emailed to the parents of students at Immaculate Conception Academy.

Catholic education will remain available to the students currently attending the school, according to the diocese.

The diocese says enclosed in Father Sedar’s letter was information about the Catholic School Continuation Grant available for families who want to continue their child’s education at another Catholic school in the Diocese of Allentown.

Information about neighboring Catholic elementary schools in Berks County was also included with the letter, and the parish and the Diocese will work closely with each family to assist in the transition, according to the news release.

In the letter, Father Sedar said the school faced a steady decline in enrollment in recent years, which placed financial pressure on parish resources. The parish had to cover the school’s revenue shortfall to meet operating costs, the diocese said.

Father Sedar said a building repair also added to the academy’s financial challenges.

After exploring options including enrollment initiatives, fundraising, and operational changes, it became clear that the school could not responsibly continue operating in a manner that would provide a stable, sustainable educational environment, the diocese said.

The Diocesan Council of Priests and the Diocesan Board of Education both recommended closure after reviewing Father Sedar’s request to close the school, according to the news release.

Diocese of Allentown Bishop Alfred A. Schlert accepted the recommendation.

Father Sedar told parents in the letter that, “While this chapter is coming to an end, the mission of Catholic education continues. The faith that has been taught within these walls, the friendships that have been formed, and the lives that have been shaped by Christ will endure far beyond the life of the institution itself.”
